< Day Break >
The time is dawn. We are left alone, detached from our daytime crowd.
The people in the painting, in this case ‘we’, are facing ourselves buck naked, nothing attached. My work is a tool to describe diverse human desires of the 21st century city dwellers, and the work represent the codes that signify agonies embedded in our everyday livelihood.
The cactus symbolize the pain and weight of reality as well as an unadulterated creed for oneself.
The one in red hair embracing the weight of painful reality is depicted as a passionate ‘hot’ being. On the other hand, the one in blue hair hiding behind their reality is shown as an indifferent ‘cool’ creature. The last one sitting (and resting a chin on his hands) is tangled in his thinking and is preoccupied with little worries hopelessly scattered on the streets of the contemporary city.
I intentionally left the faces blank, with no emotion attached, to allow viewers to imagine and sympathize, creating their own emotions.
This contemporary landscape is not alien to me and I am exactly one of them in my 30’s. The thorns of cactus hurt, but its flower whispers ‘I am the burning heart’. Like the whisper of the cactus, I paint day by day with my own burning heart to embrace this brutal world with certain hope.
I also want to say through my painting that we thrive in silence and loneliness, where we can truly confront ourselves, and contemplate away from the gaze of others.
< Day Break >
무리생활에서 벗어난 새벽시간. 우리는 철저히 독립되어 혼자 남는다. 그림 속의 사람들은 아무것도 걸치지 않은 채 맨몸으로 온전한 자신과 마주하고 있다. 본인은 현대인의 일상의 풍경 속에서 인간의 여러 가지 욕망의 모습들을 풀어내는데, 이 작업에서는 고단한 삶을 대하는 인간의 여러 모습을 상징적으로 보여주고자 했다.
그림 속에서 선인장은 현실의 고통과 무게, 혹은 굽혀서는 안 될 신념을 상징한다. 삶의 무게를 고스란히 껴안으려는 인간은 뜨겁고(붉은색 머리카락), 그 무게들 뒤에 숨는 사람은 차갑다. 턱을 괴고 갈등하는 모습의 사람은 바닥에 놓인 다른 작은 고민들까지 더해져 복잡하다. 그러나 그들의 얼굴표정을 확정지어 그려 넣지 않은 까닭은 관람객의 상태에 따라 각기 다른 표정을 상상할 수 있도록 하고자 함이다.
상징적으로 그려진 현실의 모습은 30대인 작가 본인이 바라본 주변의 낯설지 않은 풍경이었으며 본인도 저들 중 한명이다. 선인장의 가시는 아프지만, 꽃말은 ‘불타는 마음’이라고 한다. 그 꽃말처럼 불타는 마음가짐으로 쉽지 않은 현실과 신념들을 끝까지 안고 살아주기를 바라며 작업한다. 또한 그룹과 타인의 시선 속에서가 아닌 자신을 진솔하게 마주하고 사유하는 혼자만의 시간과 고요의 중요성을 이야기하고 싶었다.
